Octopus Energy is introducing a project of 300 “zero bills” homes, promising residents a decade of gas and electricity without any costs. The energy provider has collaborated with Prosperity Group to construct these homes in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, set to be finished by 2028.
These properties, equipped with heat pumps, batteries, and solar panels, will not reveal their pricing yet. This initiative comes as the energy price cap is anticipated to increase due to rising oil costs post the Iran conflict, with the current cap standing at £1,641 annually for an average household.
Octopus Energy has already sanctioned over 6,000 “zero bills” homes in partnership with prominent developers, offering options like private rent, privately owned, and shared ownership. With a goal to deliver 100,000 Zero Bills homes by 2030, Octopus has expanded this program to countries like Germany, France, New Zealand, and the UK.
Recent data from Octopus indicates a surge in heat pump sales by 103%, solar panel sales by 78%, and electric vehicle charger inquiries by 42%, as Britons seek to enhance their energy self-sufficiency. Nigel Banks, the Zero Bills Director at Octopus Energy, noted the increasing demand for protection against unpredictable energy prices, highlighting the reality of living without energy bills through their Zero Bills tariff.
Joe Billingham, Chairman of Prosperity Group, emphasized their focus on innovative developments and the integration of advanced technology in partnership with Octopus Energy for enhanced living experiences and long-term investment benefits. This strategic collaboration aims to meet evolving regulatory standards and cater to the rising demand for sustainable and energy-efficient homes.
Moreover, a recent study by Uswitch reveals that energy suppliers are holding £3 billion in customer credit, urging households to check if they are eligible to reclaim some of these funds, with the average home having almost £200 in credit.
