“Russia and China Veto UN Resolution on Strait of Hormuz”

Date:

Russia and China have vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution intended to reopen the vital shipping route of the Strait of Hormuz, just prior to President Donald Trump’s ultimatum for Iran to comply with the reopening demand.

The resolution, supported by Bahrain, failed to pass with 11 votes in favor, two abstentions, and two opposing votes from Russia and China, both possessing veto power within the council.

President Trump had set a deadline of 8 pm ET (1 am BST Wednesday) for Iran to reopen the strait, warning of potential attacks on Iran’s infrastructure if they did not comply. The significance of the strait lies in its role as a pathway for one-fifth of the world’s oil, and Iran’s control over it during conflicts has led to a surge in energy prices.

Initially, the resolution included provisions for countries to use “all necessary means,” a term encompassing military action, to ensure passage through the strait. However, after objections from Russia, China, and France, the resolution was revised to focus solely on defensive measures, removing any offensive action references.

Efforts to secure approval for the resolution were ongoing, with adjustments made to eliminate mentions of Security Council authorization for action and to confine its scope to the Strait of Hormuz.

The vetoed resolution urged states interested in utilizing the strait for maritime trade to coordinate defensive efforts to safeguard navigation. It emphasized the need to protect commercial vessels and deter any actions obstructing international passage through the strait.

Furthermore, the resolution demanded that Iran cease attacks on vessels, refrain from hindering navigation, and stop targeting civilian infrastructure in retaliation for US and Israeli attacks. The ongoing conflict has resulted in casualties on both sides, with significant impacts on various countries in the region.

The blockade of the strait by Iran is viewed as a major threat by Gulf Arab states, with Bahrain advocating for UN intervention due to its strategic location hosting the US Fifth Fleet and currently holding the Security Council presidency.

The conflict has led to significant casualties on all sides, including military personnel and civilians, underscoring the urgent need for a resolution to the crisis in the region.
