A disturbing account of a homicide in Sicamous, B.C., unfolded in a Kamloops courtroom this week. Scott Keith McDonald, 39, is facing a second-degree murder charge in the death of Jo Ann Jackson, 66, who was discovered unresponsive in McDonald’s driveway on June 19, 2024. The assault was captured on McDonald’s personal security camera during the early hours in the trailer park where both individuals resided.
The trial commenced on Monday with the screening of video evidence depicting the incident. The altercation began when Jackson knocked on McDonald’s door to request the lowering of music volume, leading to a violent encounter. McDonald reportedly assaulted Jackson, including beating her and using a hose to force water into her mouth, a method likened to waterboarding.
During the court proceedings, a neighbor who witnessed the assault testified on Tuesday, while forensic pathologist Dr. Farshaad Bilimoria provided expert testimony on Wednesday. Dr. Bilimoria’s autopsy findings indicated that the victim’s death resulted from a combination of injuries, such as blunt force trauma and asphyxiation from pressure on her neck and the waterboarding incident.
In Tuesday’s testimony, neighbor Erwin Nehring recounted observing McDonald repeatedly striking Jackson with his fists through his kitchen window around 3:15 a.m. Nehring also mentioned observing the accused consuming beer throughout the preceding day, though he could not confirm the extent of consumption or McDonald’s level of intoxication at the time of the assault.
McDonald has acknowledged responsibility for Jackson’s death but is hoping for a verdict of not criminally responsible due to mental illness or intoxication impairing his intent. The trial, presided over by a judge without a jury, is anticipated to span three weeks, with proceedings set to reconvene on Monday.
