President Donald Trump has reportedly requested Apple to change the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America” on its maps, as tensions between the U.S. and Canada persist. U.S. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum revealed on Fox Business that Trump directly contacted Apple regarding the renaming. It is anticipated that the change to “Lake America” on Apple Maps will occur soon.
Following Trump’s executive order to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” trade disputes between the U.S. and Canada escalated, leading to the imposition of tariffs by both countries. Despite Canada’s retaliatory levies set to take effect soon, Prime Minister Mark Carney firmly opposed the name change, affirming that Lake Ontario will remain known as such.
Google announced that users in the U.S. will see “Lake America” instead of Lake Ontario on Google Maps, reflecting the formal change in the U.S. Geographic Names Information System. Although Canadian users will still see Lake Ontario on Google Maps, certain Ontario and Canadian websites displayed Lake America temporarily due to third-party protocols pulling data from Google’s U.S. API.
Affected maps, including those on Hydro One and LCBO websites in Ontario, have since reverted to displaying Lake Ontario. Apple has not yet responded to inquiries about Trump’s request to rename the lake on Apple Maps. Currently, Apple Maps in Canada continues to label the body of water as Lake Ontario.
In a previous executive order in 2025, Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, impacting U.S. federal documents and geographic services. While some online services and news agencies have adopted the new name, Apple Maps currently denotes the area as “Gulf of Mexico (Gulf of America).”
