The Vancouver Rise have strengthened their squad with the addition of two new defenders this week in preparation for their upcoming important match against the Halifax Tides. Chantelle Swaby, who previously played for Leicester City in the Women’s Super League, and Kaela Hansen, formerly with AFC Toronto in the NSL, have joined the team.
Head coach Anja Heiner-Moller praised both players for the qualities they bring to the team. Swaby, aged 28, has a wealth of experience having played in various top leagues around the world, making her a valuable asset to the Rise. Hansen, 26, expressed her excitement at returning home to play for the Rise and in front of a local crowd.
These signings come after the retirement of Mariah Lee, a veteran forward who chose to pursue a career in law, and the loan of goalkeeper Kirstin Tynan to the Halifax Tides for the remainder of the season. The Rise, currently standing at 5-9-1, are aiming to secure a playoff spot and are closely trailing Halifax, the current fourth-placed team in the league.
Forward Jessica De Fillippo emphasized the importance of this stage of the season, expressing the team’s determination to return to the playoffs and showcase their competitiveness until the end of the season.
