“British Marmalade Name Unchanged Amid EU Rules”

Date:

Marmalade to Retain Name Despite EU Rules Controversy

Despite assertions from senior Tory and Reform politicians, there will be no requirement to rename marmalade in compliance with EU regulations.

There were previous claims that the cherished British breakfast staple would need to be relabeled as “citrus marmalade” to adhere to a new EU directive. This move was linked to Keir Starmer’s efforts to align Britain more closely with Brussels for trade enhancement and to bolster Europe amidst growing instability in the United States.

This sparked a strong reaction, with Reform UK’s Richard Tice insisting, “hands off our marmalade!” Shadow Foreign Secretary Priti Patel also criticized Labour for supposedly attacking British marmalade.

However, the regulations permit the substitution of ‘citrus’ for the fruit’s name, allowing for the continued use of terms like “orange marmalade.” Most marmalade brands in the UK already use such labeling, including Robertson’s Golden Shred, Mrs. Bridges, and Wilkin and Sons.

A government insider dismissed the controversy, stating, “This situation isn’t as troublesome as portrayed. The uproar from the Tories and Reform is unfounded as jar labels will remain unchanged. The name ‘orange marmalade’ is not in jeopardy, so there is no need for alarm.”

The new rule was implemented to differentiate between ‘marmalade’ and ‘jam’ usage in various EU countries, aiming to protect the unique identity of this favored spread. The iconic product can still be marketed as orange marmalade by substituting ‘citrus’ with the specific fruit name.

A spokesperson from the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) affirmed, “British marmalade remains unchanged, ensuring continuity in our stores. British producers align with global standards to facilitate international sales.”

The UK’s deal with the EU streamlines processes for exporters, reducing burdensome bureaucracy and securing the country’s influence over industry regulations to safeguard national interests.
