“Government Removes Two-Child Benefit Cap, Aids 1.5M Kids”

Date:

Up to 1.5 million children will see improved benefits starting today as the Conservative government has officially removed the two-child benefit cap. Advocates have celebrated this change, citing the previous policy as a leading cause of 100 children falling into poverty daily. Despite opposition, around half a million children are expected to be lifted out of poverty due to this significant decision.

Both right-wing parties have expressed intentions to reinstate the policy, which limited benefits like Universal Credit to a family’s first two children, if they come to power. Mark Russell, CEO of The Children’s Society, emphasized the positive impact of ending the two-child limit, stating that it will positively affect families nationwide.

Angi Gibson, headteacher at Hadrian Park Primary School, highlighted the immediate benefits families will experience due to this change, emphasizing the positive impact on children’s life opportunities. Helen Barnard, director of policy and research at Trussell, a foodbank charity, described the removal of the two-child limit as a crucial moment for families and the food banks supporting them.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced in the Budget last November that the two-child limit would be entirely abolished. Research indicates that two-thirds of affected children come from households where at least one person is employed. Labour has hailed this move as the most significant reduction in child poverty in a generation, emphasizing the support it provides to families in need.

Employment minister Dame Diana Johnson expressed optimism about the future, stating that the removal of the two-child limit will offer hundreds of thousands of children greater security and opportunities for growth. The government aims to diminish the correlation between a child’s background and their life prospects, taking a step closer to achieving this goal.
