Balancing screen time and quality family time can be a daily challenge for many families. With children increasingly using devices for various activities like learning, staying connected, gaming, and streaming, determining a reasonable amount of screen time can be difficult.
In an effort to promote open and honest conversations about online safety within families, a campaign called The Family Chat, in collaboration with Tesco Mobile, is being conducted throughout 2026. Author and podcaster, Giovanna Fletcher, is engaging with parents and children to discuss the challenges they encounter, how they are addressing them, and how Tesco Mobile’s online safety resources can be beneficial.
Among the resources available is a downloadable family pledge that encourages families to establish simple commitments regarding healthy screen time habits and online safety measures. Giovanna mentions that although her family is currently managing well in handling screen time, they recognize the importance of regularly reviewing and adapting their approach.
For the Karley family, consisting of Anna, Emmanuel, and their three teenagers, phones play a crucial role in staying connected, managing schoolwork, and navigating their busy lives. To make learning about screen time more engaging, the Karleys participated in the Team Mum v Team Dad Online Safety Challenge, completing tasks without using their phones.
After successfully completing the challenges, the family committed to implementing what they had learned by filling out Tesco Mobile’s family pledge, focusing on screen time management, privacy, and sharing guidelines. Anna and Emmanuel plan to utilize the expert advice and resources available on Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub to help their family strike a healthy balance between digital usage and real-world interactions.
Implementing a phones-down rule at 9.30 pm to facilitate more family time, the Karleys are enthusiastic about adhering to the family pledge and working together towards a fresh start. They aim to reinforce their commitment by displaying the pledge on the fridge and embracing new rules as a united family.
In addition to these efforts, it is essential for families to be vigilant when consuming online content. Key things to watch out for include sensational headlines, suspicious websites, isolated stories, provocative posts, and verifying information from trusted sources. Parents can also guide their children on verifying social media accounts and engage in fact-checking activities together for a safer online experience.
