British armed forces have thwarted an effort by Russian submarines to spy on crucial undersea cables during a period when global attention was focused on the Iran crisis, as revealed by the Defence Secretary. John Healey issued a warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin, declaring, “We see you,” as he disclosed a covert scheme by Moscow to surveil essential infrastructure in the north Atlantic. The Navy utilized a Type 23 frigate HMS St Albans, RFA Tidespring, and Merlin helicopters in a month-long operation involving over 5,000 British personnel to monitor the Russian Akula class nuclear-powered attack submarine and two spy vessels. Sonobuoys, which are acoustic sensors capable of detecting, classifying, and tracking underwater threats, were deployed by the military to deter Russia from harming undersea cables. RAF crews conducted more than 50 sorties using P-8 Poseidon submarine-hunting aircraft, with assistance from allies like Norway.
During a press conference at Downing Street, Mr. Healey directly addressed the Russian President, emphasizing the UK’s vigilance over its cables and pipelines, warning of severe consequences for any attempts to disrupt them. He stressed that the recent operation occurred amidst significant global distractions, emphasizing that Russia remains the primary threat to Britain. Satellite images of Olenya Guba, Russia’s naval base in the High North, were published by the Ministry of Defence, raising concerns about Russian threats to a vast network of undersea cables and pipelines critical for international telecommunications, data traffic, banking, trade, and gas supply. Despite the surveillance, no evidence of damage was found in the recent incident. The UK has witnessed a surge in Russian vessel activities near its waters, with a spy ship, the Yantar, previously engaging in provocative behavior towards RAF pilots.
