Lawrence Okolie has hinted that his bicep injury treatment might have led to his positive drug test. The former cruiserweight and bridgerweight champion was set to face Tony Yoka in Paris for his heavyweight campaign. However, his promoter, Queensberry, revealed that Okolie had an adverse finding in an anti-doping test conducted by VADA.
Taking to social media, Okolie explained that he had sustained an elbow injury on the same arm as his previous bicep injury during his training camp. He emphasized that he had undergone treatment for it and expressed confidence that any investigation would clear his name.
Okolie and Yoka both participated in the 2016 Rio Olympics in different weight categories. While Yoka won a gold medal, Okolie left empty-handed. Okolie later became a world champion at cruiserweight before transitioning to bridgerweight and then to heavyweight. He had won his last three fights before the scheduled bout with Yoka.
Okolie stated that moving up to heavyweight had made him feel stronger and more explosive than ever. He saw the fight with Yoka as a significant opportunity, likening it to his chance at an Olympic gold medal. Okolie acknowledged Yoka’s skills but felt that the momentum was in his favor.
