Balsam fir trees in New Brunswick are exhibiting a concerning phenomenon of turning red and perishing following the unprecedented drought experienced last summer. This situation is raising alarms about the future of these iconic provincial trees. Forestry expert Prof. Anthony Taylor from the University of New Brunswick has been closely monitoring the situation. He has been in contact with woodlot owners witnessing the distressing effects firsthand. The once vibrant evergreen trees, commonly used as Christmas trees, are gradually transitioning to a red, desiccated state before succumbing to death.
Prof. Taylor, who has extensively researched the impact of climate change on New Brunswick’s forests, highlights the detrimental consequences of warm, arid conditions on the growth of balsam fir trees. Drawing parallels to past occurrences after hot, dry summers in 1986 and 2018, Taylor emphasizes that these conditions hinder the trees’ ability to thrive. The trees halt their photosynthesis process prematurely in response to drought stress, impeding their growth and energy production essential for sustenance and defense mechanisms.
Furthermore, the shallow root system of balsam firs exacerbates their struggle to access water during dry spells. Peter McKeil, a woodlot owner, has observed the distressing effects on his trees since June, with the lower branches progressively turning red. Despite processing some of the deceased trees into lumber, McKeil is adapting his harvesting practices to salvage the remaining fir trees before further losses occur. He expresses concern over the future of the species, particularly in southern New Brunswick, attributing the ongoing climate change to the trees’ declining health.
