The motive for the shooting was purportedly retaliation for an incident where Shakur’s entourage allegedly beat the nephew of the accused, Duane (Keffe D) Davis, who is facing a murder charge in Clark County, Nevada. Davis, now 63, has pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder using a deadly weapon.
According to the prosecutor, Davis orchestrated the killing, ensuring that the shooters were prepared and armed when the opportunity for revenge arose. The case was reignited by recent public statements made by Davis himself. In contrast, the defense argued that after three decades, there is insufficient evidence to support the prosecution’s claims, casting doubt on Davis’s credibility due to inconsistencies in his accounts.
Shakur’s tragic death further fueled the perception of violence in hip-hop culture during the “gangsta” rap era, exacerbating the East Coast-West Coast rap rivalry.
