Five high-ranking Iranian officials are set to be sanctioned for their involvement in actions in the Strait of Hormuz that undermine global peace, as per Canada’s foreign affairs minister. The minister’s statement emphasized the importance of freedom of navigation in the strait for international trade and energy security. The sanctions target individuals from the Islamic Republic of Iran, including members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, for actions that have posed threats to a crucial international waterway.
The sanctioned officials include Ali Abdollahi, the commander of Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters; Lt.-Col. Ebrahim Zolfaghari, a spokesperson for the same headquarters; Ebrahim Azizi, a parliamentarian and head of the Iranian parliament’s national security and foreign policy committee; Shahram Irani, the commander of Artesh, the Iranian navy; and Hamid Hosseini, the chair of the board of directors and spokesperson for the Iranian Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Products Exporters Union.
Canada has now imposed sanctions on a total of 232 individuals and 260 entities connected to Iran’s security, intelligence, and economic sectors. The move comes amidst increasing pressure to resolve the conflict involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran, following a peace agreement that has yet to materialize. The war, which began in February, has seen shifts in rhetoric from U.S. President Donald Trump between threats of escalation and claims of an impending peace deal.
Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz has been a point of contention, with efforts to block commercial shipping in the waterway. Trump has urged allies to help secure the vital oil shipping route, while Canada and other nations have called on Iran to cease obstruction and expressed readiness to assist in reopening the strait. Trump’s frustration has grown as allies’ relationships strain over the conflict, with public criticism directed at Britain’s stance.
Despite claims of military success against Iran, disruptions to shipping persist, prompting discussions about maintaining a naval presence in the region for an extended period. Pressure mounts on Trump to end the war as fuel prices impact his approval ratings ahead of the U.S. midterm elections. The global economy faces challenges, with the International Energy Agency forecasting a significant decline in global oil supply for the year.
