“Bibury: The Most Beautiful Village in the World”

Date:

A charming village in the Cotswolds has captured global attention for its enchanting appeal and renowned cottages.

Renowned for its golden-toned architecture, picturesque countryside vistas, and idyllic villages, the Cotswolds offer some of the most stunning landscapes in the country. Many of its towns have received prestigious accolades for their quintessentially English allure.

Among the notable settlements are Bourton-on-the-Water in Gloucestershire, often likened to the ‘Venice of the Cotswolds’ due to its low stone bridges; Broadway in Worcestershire, known as the ‘Jewel of the Cotswolds’; and Burford in West Oxfordshire, referred to as the ‘Gateway to the Cotswolds’. However, standing out among these gems is a village hailed as not only the most beautiful in the Cotswolds but in the entire world.

Nestled in Gloucestershire within the heart of the Cotswolds is the picturesque village of Bibury. Characterized by ancient honey-colored stone buildings, the meandering River Coln, and the Rack Isle water meadow, Bibury is conveniently located just a short drive from Cirencester, known as the ‘Capital of the Cotswolds.’

Bibury has gained international acclaim, being named the most beautiful village globally by Forbes in September of last year and previously recognized as one of the world’s most picturesque villages. English designer and poet William Morris also lauded Bibury as ‘the most beautiful village in England.’

Despite being one of the smaller destinations in the Cotswolds, Bibury draws thousands of visitors annually and is home to Arlington Row, one of the most photographed streets in the region. The charming row of cottages in Arlington Row dates back to the 14th century when it served as a wool store for a monastery before being converted into weavers’ cottages in the 17th century.

Today, Arlington Row houses private residences, with the street remaining Bibury’s top attraction and the most photographed spot in the Cotswolds. Some houses here display polite signs requesting ‘No photos please’ due to the high tourist influx.

Nevertheless, the village’s beauty remains undeniable, with the scenic River Coln flowing nearby, pristine green spaces, streams, and charming establishments. Across from Arlington Row lies Eleven Bibury, featuring a stylish café, gallery shop, and terraced garden.

Another popular attraction in the village is Bibury Trout Farm, where visitors can enjoy the scenic surroundings before trying their hand at fishing, playing mini golf, or indulging in refreshments at the café or Kelly’s Ice cream. The Twig café nearby offers a perfect stop for coffee and cake before exploring the paths and walking routes around Bibury.

For lodging options in Bibury, visitors can choose from holiday rentals like Sackville House, The Bothy, and Sundial Cottage, or opt for the four-star accommodation at The Swan Hotel. While activities may be limited in the village, its picture-perfect setting, tranquil river walks, and serene green spaces against the backdrop of stone cottages make it a must-visit destination.
