“Billy Bishop Legion Adapts, Seeks New Members for 100th Anniversary”

Date:

In Vancouver’s Kitsilano neighborhood, the Billy Bishop Legion offers a unique blend of veterans enjoying drinks in a traditional pub downstairs while yoga enthusiasts stretch on bright mats upstairs among military relics. One of these enthusiasts, Hannah, finds solace and community in the Legion, despite not having a military background. The Legion, marking its 100th anniversary, is actively seeking new, younger members like Hannah, offering free membership to all newcomers nationwide.

The Legion’s core mission of supporting veterans remains unchanged, but branches are evolving to attract a diverse membership base. With over 100,000 new members joining in 2026, the Royal Canadian Legion’s total membership now exceeds 300,000. Despite growth, some branches have faced closures due to financial challenges, but others like the Bala Legion in Muskoka Lakes, Ontario, have thrived by adapting their offerings to include affordable meals, events, and opening doors to the wider community.

Looking ahead, the Bala Legion plans to further evolve by developing affordable rental units on its land to generate sustainable revenue. President Dennis Mills emphasizes the importance of new members to ensure the Legion’s continued vitality and service to the community. As the Legion celebrates its centenary, the push to welcome a new generation of members is crucial for its ongoing success and impact.
