A unique David Bowie self-portrait adorned with his handprints is set to go under the hammer, potentially transforming your living space. Created by the iconic singer in 1996, the artwork will make its auction debut at Sotheby’s Modern British and Irish Art Day Auction on October 15.
The self-portrait is anticipated to fetch between £35,000 to £55,000 (approximately $66,000 to $104,000 CAD). Initially gifted by Bowie to his St Ives gallerist, the painting has spent three decades in a private collection before being showcased publicly in London ahead of its upcoming auction.
Part of a series of eight large-scale portraits crafted by Bowie in the mid-1990s, this particular piece is considered the most emotionally expressive. Sotheby’s senior specialist, Jen Hardie, described the self-portrait as a reflection of Bowie’s creativity and introspection, offering a personal connection to the artist through his direct gaze and handprints on the canvas.
The painting, executed on paper, features Bowie’s distinctively uneven pupils, emphasizing his unique gaze. The artist’s handprints on the lower section of the artwork add an intimate touch, providing a rare opportunity for fans to own a tangible piece of Bowie’s artistic legacy.
