“Deadly 7.7 Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Eastern Indonesia, 47 Lives Lost”

Date:

A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.7 and subsequent aftershocks hit eastern Indonesia, leading to the loss of at least 47 lives, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB). Around 2,000 individuals sought refuge in safer areas as a result of the disaster.

Efforts to reach Nagekeo, the area nearest to the earthquake’s epicenter, have been hampered by landslides and communication disruptions. Although a tsunami warning was issued, it was lifted three hours after the initial quake.

Residents, like Nona from Talibura village, described the intense tremors and their frantic efforts to escape the impact. In Maumere, rescue operations revealed 20 fatalities, six injuries, and two individuals trapped under debris.

The head of BNPB, Suharyanto, highlighted the challenges of rescuing trapped residents and the obstacles posed by landslides blocking roads. Reports indicated that numerous buildings were damaged, with residents stranded and roads blocked by landslides.

Governor Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena confirmed at least five deaths from collapsed structures and extensive damage to various infrastructure. Videos circulating on social media depicted the chaos and destruction caused by the earthquake.

Indonesia, situated along the “Pacific Ring of Fire,” faces frequent seismic activities due to its location at the meeting point of tectonic plates. The affected regions experienced significant shaking, prompting residents to evacuate their homes in fear of further tremors.
