“Pregnant Teachers Face Extreme Measures in Schools”

Date:

A recent survey conducted by the teachers’ union NASUWT revealed distressing situations where pregnant teachers had to resort to extreme measures due to rigid policies in schools. Some teachers reported having to use a bucket in a classroom cupboard or a radio to request cover just to go to the toilet.

The study highlighted the challenges faced by teachers who are also parents, with 95% struggling to balance work responsibilities with parenting duties. Additionally, 70% of teachers have contemplated leaving the profession due to the impact of work on their children.

Concerns were raised about the lack of support for pregnant teachers, as 28% felt pressured to return to work prematurely after experiencing pregnancy-related illness. Moreover, many teachers off on pregnancy-related leave were asked to continue working by setting tasks, marking work, and writing reports.

The survey found that over half of teachers felt that their employers did not adequately assess and address workplace risks related to pregnancy. Furthermore, many teachers expressed a desire for more time off for maternity, paternity, or adoption leave.

NASUWT also highlighted the struggle of teacher-parents to balance work and family responsibilities. An overwhelming 86% of respondents reported missing important moments with their children due to work commitments. Many teachers felt that their job hindered their ability to care for their sick children or attend school events.

Matt Wrack, NASUWT General Secretary, criticized the lack of support for teachers who are parents, citing low maternity pay, inadequate parental leave, and limited flexible working options as national issues. He emphasized that the inflexible working structures and high workload in schools are driving talented teachers away from the profession.

The survey, which involved 2,164 teachers surveyed last November and December, sheds light on the challenges faced by teachers trying to juggle their professional and parental responsibilities.
