“US Plans Indefinite Naval Blockade and Economic Pressure on Iran”

Date:

The United States stated on Thursday its intention to uphold a naval blockade of Iran indefinitely and escalate economic pressure on Tehran amid stalled ceasefire negotiations, a decline in global oil supply, and escalating regional tensions. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth confirmed the U.S. military’s capability to maintain a naval presence in the region to enforce the blockade, causing significant economic harm to Iran.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also indicated plans for further financial measures against Iran, suggesting unprecedented steps in economic isolation. With the collapse of a tentative June peace deal, Iran has attempted to leverage its control over the Strait of Hormuz, attacking vessels passing through the vital waterway.

President Donald Trump faces domestic pressure to end the unpopular conflict, with soaring fuel prices impacting his approval ratings and potentially jeopardizing his party’s congressional control. Despite Trump’s claims of U.S. dominance over the strait, Iran insists on its control and conditions for reopening the waterway, including lifting economic sanctions and releasing frozen assets.

The U.S. lifted and reinstated its blockade on Iran’s shipping and ports, exacerbating the country’s economic hardships. While Trump has threatened military actions, he has refrained from deploying ground troops or launching direct attacks, opting for economic pressure over military escalation.

Global economic stress is mounting, with the International Energy Agency projecting a significant decline in global oil supply. Oil prices fluctuated amid concerns over weaker demand and reports of drone attacks on a Saudi Aramco refinery by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis, fueling fears of a broader regional conflict.

Economists warn of a potential global recession if the war persists, emphasizing the urgency for a resolution. Hegseth declined to comment on the decision to declare a ceasefire in April, underscoring the priority of preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
