Provincial authorities have disclosed the discovery of a third set of human remains at a location near Smiths Falls in eastern Ontario. The newly found remains have been confirmed to belong to Lawrence Bertrim, who was last seen in downtown Smiths Falls in September 2022. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Bertrim’s death. No charges have been filed yet, and a reward of $50,000 remains available for any information leading to a conviction in the case.
Lawrence Bertrim, who was 42 years old at the time of his disappearance, has been located, providing closure for his family after a nearly four-year wait for answers. Detective Inspector Jennifer Patton of the OPP expressed the significance of this discovery for both the family and the investigative team who have devoted extensive efforts to the case. The authorities have urged the public to be patient as the investigation progresses.
The remains of Lawrence Bertrim were found on August 6 at the Kelly Jordan Road property, a day after the police announced the discovery of another missing man, Robert Lambert, on the same premises in July. While no charges have been laid in Lambert’s case, authorities had previously indicated suspicions of foul play.
In a related development, the remains of Robbie Thomson were discovered on the same residential property in October 2025. Four individuals, including three facing charges of first-degree murder, have been implicated in connection with Thomson’s death. It was reported by CBC News in 2023 that Bertrim and Thomson were acquainted, and they were also associated with Steven Tate, whose body was found in a ditch along Highway 15 in November 2023.
The deaths of Tate, Bertrim, and Thomson captivated the Smiths Falls area, with the findings of the initial two sets of remains profoundly impacting the local community and surrounding rural regions, as noted by the local reeve.
