“Eurostar Standard vs Plus: Is the Upgrade Worth It?”

Date:

Eurostar provides a speedy and efficient travel option from London to continental destinations, offering a time-saving alternative to flying for day trips or short getaways. When booking your Eurostar journey, you typically have three fare choices: Standard, Plus, and Premier. I recently experienced both the Standard and Plus classes on separate trips to compare their offerings. Despite Plus tickets often being much pricier than Standard ones, I explored whether the upgrade is justified.

My journey on Eurostar Standard from London to Lille, a quick 90-minute ride from London St Pancras, cost me just £35 one-way during a flash sale, making it a budget-friendly option compared to domestic UK train fares. Standard class provides a basic service with a luggage allowance of two bags up to 85cm in length, along with additional small items like handbags and laptop bags. Unlike air travel, there are no strict weight or liquid restrictions, but be prepared to handle your luggage on the train’s steep stairs.

The seating arrangement in Standard consists of two rows of two seats, featuring headrests and footrests for added comfort. Notably, Standard tickets offer flexibility up to an hour before departure, allowing you to change your booking without a fee, only paying the fare difference. Each seat is equipped with a power outlet, and although WiFi access is available, its reliability can vary, so bringing a book is advisable. The journey to Lille passed quickly, and upon arrival, I was ready to start exploring the city.

On a subsequent trip from London to Paris in Eurostar Plus, I found the boarding process and luggage regulations to be similar to Standard class. Plus cabins resemble Standard ones but with a single seat on one side and two seats on the other. Business travelers seemed to prefer the single seats for productivity, despite the intermittent WiFi connection.

However, my Plus experience was marred by maintenance issues with the toilets, causing inconvenience during the journey. The main upgrade in Plus class is the provision of breakfast or a light meal, accompanied by a selection of beverages, including wine and beer. While the meal quality was satisfactory, it was akin to what you might find at a station café.

Eurostar Plus staff were notably friendly and attentive, enhancing the overall service experience. The Plus carriage exuded a more serene, business-oriented atmosphere, making it suitable for travelers seeking a peaceful journey or solo passengers looking for privacy. For those content with their own snacks, opting for Standard and saving on the upgrade could be a practical choice, preserving funds for indulgences at the destination.
