Sir Nick Faldo praised Rory McIlroy as one of the greatest golfers in history but stopped short of crowning him as the absolute best. McIlroy, aged 36, added to his impressive career by successfully defending his Masters title at Augusta on Sunday.
McIlroy’s final round score of one-under-par 71 was enough to surpass world No.1 Scottie Scheffler, securing his sixth major championship and making him just the fourth player ever to win back-to-back Masters titles alongside Jack Nicklaus, Faldo, and Tiger Woods.
Last year, McIlroy joined an elite group of six players who completed the career Grand Slam after a dramatic playoff victory over Justin Rose. Faldo, a six-time major champion, acknowledged McIlroy’s achievements but positioned him below Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Nicklaus, and Woods in the list of all-time greats.
Reflecting on golf through the generations, Faldo compared McIlroy to Gene Sarazen, emphasizing the evolution of the sport and the significance of McIlroy’s Grand Slam accomplishment. He indicated that McIlroy’s first Masters win could pave the way for more major victories.
McIlroy, after his latest win, expressed gratitude to his wife Erica and daughter Poppy for their unwavering support. He mentioned how this victory has become a special tradition for his family, particularly for Poppy’s fondness for the Masters week activities.
