Reform UK is facing calls to remove its housing spokesperson following controversial comments linking the Grenfell Tower fire to fate, downplaying it as a “tragedy” where “everyone dies eventually.”
Simon Dudley, a former executive at Homes England and the Ebbsfleet Development Corporation, criticized what he viewed as excessive regulation post the tragic 2017 blaze in London. The Grenfell Inquiry determined the 72 deaths were preventable due to governmental and industry failures in addressing fire hazards in tall buildings over many years.
Appointed as Reform’s housing spokesperson recently, Dudley aimed to lead a review on the nation’s building challenges, proposing changes in planning, housing delivery, and infrastructure. In an interview, he criticized the post-Grenfell safety regulations, deeming them ineffective.
The Building Safety Regulator, created post-Grenfell, has faced criticism for delays, prompting the government to introduce reforms to expedite high-rise construction projects.
Dudley argued that fatal house fires are relatively rare, suggesting the focus on Grenfell is disproportionate. He emphasized the need for a balance between safety measures and facilitating housing construction.
Critics, including Housing Secretary Steve Reed and Green Party MP Sian Berry, condemned Dudley’s remarks as insensitive and disrespectful to Grenfell victims. They called for his dismissal, citing Reform’s stance on safety regulations.
Reform defended Dudley, emphasizing the importance of safe housing while cautioning against regulations that hinder construction progress. They highlighted the need for a balanced approach to ensure both safety and efficiency in building practices.
