“Conservative MP Criticized for Charging Constituents for Coffee Chat”

Date:

A senior member of the Conservative party has faced criticism for charging constituents for tickets to a coffee morning where they can discuss local issues. Matt Vickers, deputy party chairman and a shadow Home Office minister, has organized the event in Stockton West, asking attendees to pay £5. Critics have condemned this move, stating that it is unfair to expect the public to pay to meet their own MP.

In an email sent to locals, Vickers’ team promoted the event as an opportunity to address concerns or simply have a casual chat. However, the email specified that tickets would be sold on a first-come, first-served basis, with proceeds going towards his campaign fund. This means that constituents who participate in the event will essentially be funding Vickers’ political activities.

One recipient of the email expressed dismay at being asked to pay to engage with their MP, highlighting the issue of accessibility. Labour MP Chris McDonald also voiced his disapproval, emphasizing that constituents should not have to pay to communicate with their elected representatives.

The leader of Stockton Borough Council, Cllr Lisa Evans, criticized Vickers for charging residents to interact with him, urging him to reconsider the decision. Luke Myer, a Labour MP, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that constituents should not be required to pay to have their voices heard by their MP.

Vickers defended his actions, stating that the coffee morning was an informal gathering and that there are other free opportunities for constituents to engage with him. He emphasized that the small charge was to cover refreshment costs and pointed out that Labour MPs also host paid events. Vickers reiterated his commitment to engaging with the community and delivering for residents.

Despite the backlash, Vickers maintained that the event was a casual gathering and defended the small fee as necessary for covering expenses. He emphasized his dedication to being accessible and engaged with the local community, aiming to serve the residents effectively.
