Tens of thousands of resident doctors in England are preparing for a six-day strike next week following unsuccessful negotiations to prevent the walkout.
The government had initially proposed an additional 1,000 training positions as part of a package deal on salary and employment terms, but this offer has now been retracted by the Health Department citing financial and operational constraints.
The Prime Minister had given the British Medical Association’s resident doctors committee a 48-hour ultimatum to reconsider the government’s proposal, including the extra NHS training slots.
Nevertheless, Dr. Jack Fletcher, the chair of the BMA’s resident doctors committee, expressed willingness to engage with the government to avert the strike. He emphasized the need for collaboration to resolve the situation and improve the current offer.
Dr. Fletcher criticized the government for reducing training opportunities while highlighting ongoing challenges in patient care, particularly the practice of treating patients in corridors, which he attributed to the lack of training positions.
In response to the breakdown in negotiations, a spokesperson from the Department of Health expressed disappointment with the BMA’s decision to proceed with the strike. The spokesperson reiterated that the government had presented a favorable proposal to enhance pay, career advancement, and overall working conditions for resident doctors.
Due to the strike action, the planned increase of 1,000 training places for resident doctors will not be implemented as originally intended. The government explained that the need to address strike preparations and uncertainty makes it unfeasible to launch these positions in April, although it reassured the public that patient care will not be compromised.
